22 Feb 2008 - Moya & Alice- Thanks from the club

Moya Taylor was made an honourary club member, and Alice Galletly stepped down from the committee at the clubs recent AGM. Club President Tom Addie looks back at their tremendous sevice to the club.

Moya Taylor retires as Social Secretary

At the AGM on Tuesday 12th February Moya gave up this job which she has been doing for more than 15 years. In that time she has arranged well over 300 evenings involving various forms of entertainment for club members. We have enjoyed slide shows and talks on a large variety of subjects, many with people who have a real passion for their subjects - some wonderful shows on the high mountain areas and countries of the world, local history and culture, to bee-keeping and everything else in-between. We have also enjoyed the occasional evening of wine-tasting with representatives from Oddbins, practical ballroom dancing, visits to the "Grand Old Oprey" for a country and western night and several nights for club members to exhibit and sell their amateur art work. A well as this her tenure of office has also included arranging the club Christmas party every year as well as visits to other locations like the Theatre Royal, Kelvingrove Art Galleries, the Traffic Control Centre and the Police Museum are only a few such visits that spring to mind.

It’s never easy to find people who are ready to make the commitment to serve on the club committee since this involves time spent attending meetings, which Moya has had an exemplary record of doing for these whole 15 years. As Social Secretary she has spent time and energy thinking up new ideas for Tuesday evenings as well as hosting them, contacting speakers and ensuring they turn up on the required night with the proper equipment in place etc., booking bands, as well as being responsible for banking and paying out club funds in the course of events.

Some members at the AGM commented that Moya’s retiral marked the end of an era since the weekday social nights have been part of the club programme for as long as anyone in the club can remember. However times change for better or worse and it may be that a club member will have some new ideas regarding how we approach this aspect of club activity. Certainly Moya has worked long and hard at the job and deserved the very warm and appreciative applause and good wishes she received from members on Tuesday evening.

Alice Galletly retires as club Programme Secretary

Tuesday evening not only marked Alice’s retiral as Programme Secretary but her retiral as a club committee member after a period of 22 years of service in various capacities. She has been Sunday Secretary, Vice President, President and latterly Programme Secretary, (a job she has carried out for the last 7 years). One way or another, most of us in the committee work to dead-lines but it was Alice’s job as "whipper -in" to pull together the separate programmes for each of the 5 main contributors who make up each season’s club programme, i.e. Saturday, Sunday, Bus, Weekend and Social Secretaries’ contributions, ensuring there was no clash of dates or venues, that everything was spelled and described properly and that any necessary changes to the format of the programme was done and then get all of this off in good time to David Parry who does the desk-top publishing and sees to the printing, so that you receive your programme at least one week and preferably two weeks before that programme becomes active. In other words, time was always of the essence and Alice has never failed in coping with the pressure of this and the odd last minute crisis which has occasionally developed!

Alice’s services to the club in her various capacities over the years deserves recognition and she is a very well respected, well liked member and a popular leader. Her contribution to the good functioning of the club and her good council will be missed on the committee. This was acknowledged by the warm applause of the members attending the AGM which typically, took Alice by surprise.

We wish Alice all the best and good health for the future and also good luck with the forthcoming map & compass course which she still continues to run for the club.
