11 Oct 2008 - The Club's inaugural 'Curry night'
The first social meeting at “The Edward Wylie” was well supported with nearly 40 club members coming along. A good number took advantage of the curry option of which there was a choice of 5 different types of curry, as well as the usual hot food menu. At just over £6.00 with a drink thrown in as well, it was great value for money, since all who took the curry option agreed they were surprisingly good and that they would buy them again.
Although most people who opted out of eating chose the many alcoholic options on tap and in bottle, some were quite happy to relax with a soft drink or a coffee and while away a couple of pleasant hours.
For those who don’t know this particular pub, it is both spacious and open, with a “no TV” or piped “music” policy. This means you can have a normal conversation without having to shout to be heard above the usual pub racket, (assuming you can get a word in edgeways with some of your fellow club members of course!).
It was encouraging to see so many members who are not seen that often on club walks these days, as well as the usual “hardy perennials”. I was particularly pleased to see Dougie Gallacher and Catherine, his wife. Dougie is 83 and is still getting out for the occasional wee walk, which he thoroughly enjoys. Members mixed and chatted freely, and caught up with each other and with club news. Some, whose paths had only crossed rarely or never before, found they had mutual acquaintances, friends, or connections they had previously known nothing about - we haven’t had any embarrassing revelations in this regard so far, but you never know!
We broke up about 10 ‘ish with people heading for transport after a very enjoyable night.
Hope to see you at the next meeting which will be on Thursday 6th November (check your diary for details). Cheers!
